Our actions, children’s reactions
18 March 2017, Ho Chi Minh City – American Education Group (AEG) hosted author and Master Coach Mr. William Wong for a group-parent workshop, where he spoke about the ways in which anger inside and outside the home can ultimately impact a child’s development.
He led with one alarming statistic. At present, in Vietnam, 80% of children aged 2-14 are disciplined through some form of violence.
“The social and intellectual development of a child, both physically and mentally, is rooted in their childhood experiences,” said Coach Wong, who went on to explain how experiencing anger as a child from a parent, caretaker, or other family member often results in the child projecting that anger onto others later in life. This can lead to personal issues and professional difficulties that persist throughout a person’s life, and indeed are carried forward into their own parenting, and onward into future generations.”
He discussed with parents in the audience how anger can be reduced in the household, and replaced with positive development tools. He revealed to parents how to guide their child to have the right social response mechanisms.
“In Vietnam, and all over the world, the landscape of both youth and adulthood has drastically changed. The emotions and behavioural responses that once served a purpose need to evolve to best empower our children to interact in the future with their friends, family and professional colleagues,” pointed out Coach Wong.
He also explained to parents how he sees hope for the future generation thanks to parents who recognize what creates a motivated child versus a scared child.
“A scared child will study to impress parents or teachers; they only focus because of fear of failure. A motivated child will study to succeed for themselves and believe there is always more to be achieved,” added Coach Wong
