Cargill honored with Sustainability Award 2023 in Vietnam
Wins prestigious award for second consecutive year
Cargill Vietnam today announced that it has once again been recognized on the esteemed “TOP 50 Corporate Sustainability Awards 2023” list by Nhip cau Dau tu Magazine for its Outstanding CSR Activity.
Awarded for its intensive school building program running in its 27th year as of May 2023, under Cargill Cares, an employee volunteering program, the organization has built 111 schools in 53 provinces around Vietnam, impacting over 17,000 children from economically challenged communities each year.
The program has seen the company contribute over 5.5 million USD (~130 billion VND) into the education infrastructure for Vietnam’s young minds from 1996 to date. Currently, the company is working on three new school projects that will be completed and handed over to communities in North Vietnam this autumn.
“We aim to build vibrant communities through economic development, charitable giving, employee volunteerism and partnerships. Over the last 27 years, the company has made significant strides in creating a positive social impact with our school building program, which aligns with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and with our nation’s government’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to education as a vehicle to improve the nation’s social and economic position,” said Mr. Nguyen Ba Luan, Country President of Cargill in Vietnam.
“We promised Vietnam in 1995 that we would build 100 schools by 2020 – and we delivered on that promise. We announced on our 25th anniversary a doubling of all efforts and a plan to reach 150 by 2030, and we are delivering on that now, with us opening five new schools in rural areas in Vietnam each year.”
This is the second year in a row that the company has been recognized by organizer Nhip cau Dau tu with an award which honors businesses that implement sustainable development strategies, adopt commitments for green growth and community responsibilities. The award aims to raise awareness of the private business sector on the role and importance of sustainable business, as well as to foster and raise awareness of the outstanding work that the private sector is doing in developing sustainable business.
Cargill Vietnam’s consistent dedication to sustainability and corporate social responsibility earned the company this remarkable distinction recognizing its unwavering commitment to sustainability, responsible practices, and community enrichment and serving as a role model for foreign direct investment companies actively engaged in community development in Vietnam.
In addition to the school building program, in November 2022 Cargill Vietnam had joined hands with CARE International to launch the “She Thrives” program. This two-year initiative aims to improve sustainable livelihoods among rural smallholders, particularly women and ethnic minorities from Dak Lak province by connecting farmers and producers to the necessary tools and resources, seeking to enhance their livelihoods.
Cargill Vietnam has consistently displayed its commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen during times of crisis. The company has provided financial support, including a donation of approximately 4 billion VND to the Vietnam government’s COVID-19 relief fund. This commitment further illustrates Cargill Vietnam’s dedication to the well-being of the local community and its resilience in times of adversity. “We are honored to be recognized once again with the ‘TOP 50 Corporate Sustainability Awards’,” Luan continued. “This prestigious accolade validates our ongoing efforts to make a positive impact on the lives of farmers, communities, and the environment in Vietnam. We remain dedicated to collaborating with our partners, customers, and stakeholders to drive sustainable development and create shared value. It is central to our commitment to sustainable practices, community empowerment and our mission to nourish the world in a safe, responsible, and sustainable manner.”
