The cross-continental cyclists pedaled together with DHL Express in Hanoi
Cycling duo Ron Rutland and James Owens today pedaled their way into Hanoi alongside DHL members as part of their journey which sees them cycling from London to Tokyo to attend this year’s Rugby World Cup, while raising money for the ChildFund Pass It Back program along the way.
Rutland and Owens journey sees them traverse 20 countries and territories while bearing one piece of precious cargo every inch of the way: the official game whistle which will be used for the opening match of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
Adding to the epic ride is the pair’s aim to raise money for the ChildFund Pass It Back fund, a key component of World Rugby’s Impact Beyond program for the Rugby World Cup 2019™, and a partner of the tournament’s Official Logistics Partner, DHL. ChildFund Pass It Back has changed the lives of many children in Vietnam through providing life-skills and sporting education.
During the cross-continental journey sponsored by DHL, the duo arrived Vietnam and rode around Hanoi before heading into Mong Cai (Quang Ninh) for the next leg of their journey and soon crossing the finish line in Tokyo.
Mr. Shoeib Reza Choudhury, DHL-VNPT Express Vietnam’s Country Manager said: “As one of the official partners of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, DHL is proud to support James and Ron’s amazing journey. The journey doesn’t only carry the whistle of a major international sporting event but also delivers hopes and dreams for children here and abroad.
“Plus, in true DHL style, the pair’s entire journey is trackable online – just like all of our other deliveries. We know exactly where that whistle is!”
Ron and James’ 231 days journey commenced in London on 2 February and their Vietnam stopover received a warm welcome from Team DHL.
“After riding across many cities around the world, I am still excited about pedaling into Hanoi, and it was great to have the DHL team guide us around their town for a while,” said South African Rutland.
Owens said of his Vietnam time: “We were so happy to get to play rugby and interact with children in Vietnam. Knowing that our journey is to raise money for ChildFund Pass it Back keeps me motivated over the long days in the saddle.”
In line with the company’s GoTeach corporate social responsibility pillar, funds raised will help children around Vietnam and other developing countries in south east Asia via the ChildFund Pass it Back sport program.
DHL is well known for its CSR initiatives in Vietnam which include its Global Volunteer Day – Blood Donation, Go Help – Giving bicycles for children in Tra Vinh, Uoc Mo Xanh Fund Sponsorship. etc. In 2017, DHL Express Vietnam was honoured with a Gold Award for the Best Community Programme for the first time at the 9th Global CSR Summit and Awards – the region’s longest reigning and widely respected CSR summit.
