Canon EOS 77D Breaks New Ground in Imaging Capabilities with World’s Fastest AF Focusing Speed of 0.03 seconds
Ho Chi Minh City, 15 February 2017 – Canon today announced the introduction of the new EOS 77D, a new DSLR model with the world’s fastest AF speed*. EOS 77D encapsulates the latest of Canon’s cutting-edge imaging technologies including Dual Pixel CMOS AF (DAF) and DIGIC 7 image processor. These are the advanced technologies which power the world’s fastest AF focusing speed of 0.03 seconds* during Live View.
Akin to premium models, the EOS 77D also features a top LCD display panel that reflects setting information such as shutter speed, aperture value, ISO and exposure levels, while the two control dials allow users a higher level of control.
“Featuring a host of premium features and the newest class-leading AF technology for on point precision, the new EOS 77D demonstrates Canon’s commitment to offering great value and accessibility to DSLR photography. With the introduction of the EOS 77D, enthusiasts can push their creative boundaries with confidence to explore varied expressions of stills and videos,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.
Versatile performance powered by innovation
With Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and the DIGIC 7 image processor, the EOS 77D has the world’s fastest AF focusing speed of 0.03 seconds* during Live View, and the 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor delivers such crisp images that fine details are preserved when images are enlarged to A3 prints or heavily cropped during editing. The DIGIC 7 image processor not only allows the EOS 77D to shoot at an ISO speed up to 25,600 but also allows the camera to excel in low-light conditions and shoot a rapidly moving subject, while keeping image noise at a minimum. The EOS 77D also has a continuous shooting speed of up to 6 frames per second, resulting in blur-free and razor sharp photos of decisive moments.
To quickly detect and maintain focus on the right subjects, users will appreciate the DAF system for high precision tracking and focusing while shooting in Live View mode. DAF works effectively because each pixel on the CMOS sensor consists of two photodiodes, taking in light individually. By comparing the signal difference between the two photodiodes, DAF perceptively switches focus with high precision and is able to quickly jump to the correct focus. With this, the fastest AF focusing speed of 0.03* seconds while shooting still images during Live View could be achieved. The new Smooth zone AF mode enables the user to track even moving subjects across a wider AF area.
For users who prefer shooting using the traditional optical viewfinder, the advanced all-cross type 45-point AF system provides extensive coverage for accurate detection and tracking of even moving subjects. The EOS 77D is also equipped with Colour detection AF which works with the 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor to accurately detect skin tones and focuses on people within the frame, even when an object is in front of the person.
Premium features for high operability and control
The EOS 77D is equipped with two control dials – a Main Dial on top of the camera and a Quick Control Dial on the rear panel. With two options for dial control, users are able to make quick changes to the camera settings, such as shutter speed and aperture, without taking their eye off the viewfinder. The Quick Control Dial is equipped with a lock mechanism to prevent unintended operation of the dial.
A useful companion to the Main Dial is the top LCD panel, a feature usually available only with on higher-end models. The top LCD panel allows users to quickly check all shooting settings, without having to check the LCD monitor at the back of the camera, while a quick press of a button illuminates the top LCD panel, allowing users comfortably shoot in dark locations. The EOS 77D is also equipped with a vari-angle LCD, giving users the flexibility of adjusting their desired shooting angle. This opens up many possibilities during Live View shooting, be it from a high angle or approaching the subject from a low angle.
In-camera image processing is also enhanced with the addition of Tilt Correction, allowing users to correct tilted images up to a maximum rotation of ten degrees.
Photographers who frequently shoot continuously at a higher shutter speed in indoor environments with artificial light sources such as fluorescent lamps may notice that the flicker from the light source may be captured, resulting in uneven exposure. This is because these lamps flicker at high speeds beyond the normal ability of the human eye to notice. The EOS 77D is equipped with Anti-flicker shooting, which detects such flickering and shifts shutter activation timing in order to maintain even exposure and colouring.
Masterful Cinematographic Expressions
The EOS 77D utilizes the advanced CMOS sensor, cutting-edge DAF and an array of the latest EOS movie imaging technologies that delivers vivid and cinematic videos in Full HD at 60p. The EOS 77D is also the first DSLR in our EOS series to feature Movie digital IS, where an internal gyro sensor electronically compensates for camera shakes, even when using a lens that lacks its own image stabilization mechanism.
Movie digital IS has two levels of IS: normal, which prioritizes the angle of view and suited in situations where the focal length remain constant, and High, which is ideal when shooting with a long lens, when a minor shake can result in blur images captured, for more powerful suppression of camera shake.
While recording movies, users can experiment with video techniques such as foreground to background focus shifts by simply tapping on the subject they want to focus on. DAF will ensure that the subject is constantly in focus.
The Time-lapse movie function allows user to shoot movies that encapsulates the changes of their photo’s subjects, through the passage of time, into a compressed format, and is only limited by the users’ imagination. The EOS 77D is also equipped with High Dynamic Range movie (HDR), which shoot images with normal exposure and underexposure alternately and combines them into a single frame to improve highlight detail. This is especially useful in high-contrast scenes.
Sharing memories while on the go
With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, users can transfer images and videos from the camera to the smart devices and upload them onto the Canon Image Gateway, social media platforms and cloud storage. And by using the Canon Camera Connect app, users have real-time control of camera settings such as shutter speed, focus selection and self-timer and more.
In addition, EOS 77D features Bluetooth low energy technology which maintains constant connection to a compatible smart device at a low power consumption. With this constant connection, users can view images, start remote capture, from the camera, even when the camera is in Auto Power Off mode. Smart devices with Bluetooth can wake the camera up, and switch to Wi-Fi for browsing and viewing images or perform remote capture (with Live View).
Users can also use Bluetooth to perform basic remote capture (no Live View), control image playback and slide show when the camera is connected to a TV or projector via smart devices or the new Bluetooth Wireless Remote Control BR-E1.
Bluetooth can also be used to connect the camera to the new optional Wireless Remote Control BR-E1. This wireless controller can be used to operate the camera remotely, up to a radius of 5 meters.
Equipped with Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, images and video files from the EOS 77D can be easily transferred to paired devices – printers, smartphones and computers – in real time. A dedicated Wi-Fi button enables the camera to recall a list of previously paired devices, allowing for even swifter transfer.
The EOS 77D comes with a new kit lens – EF-S18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM, a compact lens that is significantly smaller than its cousins in the same class, making it the perfect kit lens for users concerned with bulk.
Its focal length ranges from 29-88mm (35mm equivalent), covering the semi-wide-angle and mid-telephoto angles of view that are most convenient for travel and portrait photography.
The lens AF is also powered by Stepping Motor Technology (STM), ensuring smooth, quiet AF – ideal for videos. This is one lens that will increase your shooting possibilities for both stills and videos.
