Hanoians flock to PhotoMarathon 2017
Bright and early, the Hanoi Children’s Center is awash in morning light and alight in red hues of the matching shirts of the 2,300 eager men and women ‘of the lens’ for the finale of the three-series 2017 Canon PhotoMarathon.
2017 has shattered all records for the 12 year old PhotoMarathon, with over 1,200 ‘racers’ in Danang representing a fifty percent increase over last year; and over 7,000 in Ho Chi Minh City – double the turnout of 2016.
Hanoi promises to be no exception, and with 2,300 contestants along for the day, the nation’s capital has nearly fifty percent increased over last year’s event. Each will vie for a share of the record prize-pool, under the pressure of time and with three themes to be set at race time, with entrants required to submit their images to the judging panel. As they take to the streets of the nation’s capital, they will look to find the beauty in the every-day lives of citizens of the thousand year old city.
With a ‘don’t dare to even breathe’ atmosphere surrounding the archer whose arrow will deliver the first topic of the day, and leading Vietnamese and Vietnam-based photographers Hai Dong, Hai Thanh and Justin Mott who have spent this year’s PhotoMarathons in the judging booth, will join the contestants on the narrow streets of Hanoi to capture images of their own. They will then begin the process of evaluating the works of their fellow-shooters based on four key criteria: creativity, composition, color and adherence to the theme. Winners will be announced within the day.
Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 features several new categories including the admittance of images from drones, and a separate competition for online entries for those unable to attend the event in person.
The online contest requires participants to follow announcement posts on the Canon Vietnam fanpage Canon Vietnam Fanpage on contest day from the time of the first announcement, through until 5 pm, and submit photos to canonvietnamtv@gmail.comwithin the specified time frame but without the three hour limit applied to ‘offline’ participants. Winners will be chosen by Canon and announced on the fanpage on 15 November 2017 on Canon Vietnam fanpage.
